Font licensing explained:
choose the right license.

A practical guide to matching your font license to the way you create, publish, and share your work.

License — Licensed to create

Finding the right typeface is only half the decision. The other half is choosing a license that covers how the font will be used. A printed brochure, a live website, and a mobile app may use the same typeface, but they do not necessarily need the same rights.

Start with how you will use the font.

Before choosing a license, list the places your typography will appear. Think about the final output, who needs access to the files, and whether the font will be installed, embedded, or used in a product for sale.

Match the license to the medium.

Desktop & Print covers the static design uses defined in that license. Webfont covers live website text. Logos, merchandise, professional advertising, apps, and broadcast productions have their own licensing considerations. Do not assume that one purchase covers every medium.

Check the scope, not just the category.

The right category is a starting point. Your purchased scope may also define users, domains, products, productions, or named organizations. Check those details before launch, and revisit them when your project or team grows.

License the way you use the font,
not just the font you love.

A quick check before you publish.

  • Identify every intended use and final medium.
  • Confirm who needs font access and the purchased scope.
  • Keep font files protected; do not share them without permission.
  • Read the EULA and ask about anything outside your coverage.

Not sure where your project fits? Explore the license overview or tell us what you are making. The selected license and EULA govern your final rights.
